CROWNS AND BRIDGES

What are crowns?

A crown, also known as a cap, is a fixed prosthesis placed over a tooth in order to restore its shape, strength and appearance. The cap serves as the tooth’s new outer surface. Aside from cosmetic purposes, crowns may be necessary if you have a weak, damaged or heavily discolored tooth.

Crowns can be made out of different materials: ceramic, resin, porcelain and stainless steel. Each type of crown has its own advantages and disadvantages. You should therefore consult your dentist and ask for a recommendation on which type is the best option.

What are bridges?

Much like crowns, bridges are also fixed prosthetic devices placed over existing teeth or implants. If you are missing several teeth, a bridge may be recommended instead.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

With proper dental care, they can last a lifetime. It is therefore recommended to keep your teeth and gums healthy by brushing and flossing regularly. You should also avoid applying pressure on a new crown or bridge.
