ROOT CANALS

What is a root canal?

Root canals are performed in order to repair and save a decayed or infected tooth.

How does it work?

The process of a root canal involves removing the badly damaged area of the tooth (the nerve tissue, also known as the pulp) and disinfecting it. Once the area is clean, the inside of the tooth is then filled in and sealed. Leaving the nerve infected by bacteria can cause pain, swelling, infection or even abscessed tooth.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

Although symptoms are not always present, you may notice one or more of the following signs:

• Intense toothache pain when chewing;
• High sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures;
• Tooth discoloration;
• Gum swelling in the infected area;
• Recurring pimple on the gums.

How painful is a root canal?

Although root canals have been thought to inflict a lot of pain, it is actually a misconception. Thanks to modern technology, root canal treatment is said to be no more painful than having a filling placed.
